Choosing between HikMicro and Pulsar starts with the exact device, the observation task and the local asking price. Neither brand name establishes better image quality, easier handling or better value across every model.
This guide compares selected outdoor handheld ranges using manufacturer specifications and South African retail listings. It is not a controlled field test. Detection distances, sensitivity and battery runtimes are manufacturer claims unless stated otherwise. Source numbers refer to the linked references at the end.
Start with the type of device
A thermal monocular provides one eyepiece for scanning. Binocular-format devices present an image to both eyes and may be more comfortable for extended viewing. When both eyepieces display the same thermal channel, they do not provide stereoscopic thermal depth perception.
Multispectral binoculars add a digital visible-light/day-night channel to thermal imaging. Their digital night mode may use infrared illumination. HikMicro Habrok and Pulsar Symbion belong in this category; Pulsar Merger Duo also combines thermal and digital night vision. Merger LRF models are dedicated thermal binoculars. [4–8]
Read the specifications correctly
Resolution describes pixel count, not a complete measure of image quality. More detector pixels can provide a wider scene, more target detail, or both, depending on pixel pitch and optics. A longer focal length generally narrows the field of view when the detector is otherwise unchanged. Digital zoom enlarges the captured image; it does not add detector pixels.
NETD describes sensitivity to small temperature differences. A lower published threshold can be useful when comparing specifications, but does not by itself prove better field images. Keep sensor NETD separate from system NETD and check the stated measurement conditions.
Detection means noticing a target is present. It does not establish reliable species identification or the detail needed for a particular decision. Target size, distance, weather, background temperature and visibility all affect practical results. Avoid treating advertised detection ranges as guaranteed working distances.
Thermal monoculars: compare exact models
HikMicro Lynx 3.0, Falcon 2.0 and Condor LRF 2.0
Lynx 3.0 covers several detector formats, including 256×192, 320×240, 384×288 and 640×512. The LH19, LH25 and LH35 models use 384×288 detectors; LQ35 and LQ35L use 640×512. Features vary across the range, so specifications from one Lynx model should not be applied to all of them. [1]
Falcon 2.0 includes 640×512 FQ35 and FQ50 models. The FQ50L 2.0 adds laser ranging. Condor CQ50L 2.0 also combines a 640×512 detector, 50 mm optics and a laser rangefinder. These products differ in body design and handling as well as their feature sets. [2, 3]
Lynx 3.0 uses replaceable 18650 batteries; Falcon 2.0 uses replaceable 21700 batteries. Cell size alone does not establish compatibility: use the manufacturer-approved battery specification. [1, 2]
Pulsar Axion, Oryx and Telos
Axion and Oryx provide compact handheld options, while Telos occupies a larger platform with several detector and ranging configurations. Check the exact detector, lens and ranging specification for the model being quoted.
Within Telos, model suffixes matter: XP, XL and XT are different specifications. The Telos LRF XT50 offers a 1280×1024 detector. That is a higher native detector resolution than the 640×512 HikMicro handheld models discussed here, but it does not make every lower-resolution device unsuitable for the same task. [9]

Practical comparison points
Compare field of view and base magnification before maximum digital zoom. For nearby or cluttered terrain, a wider view may make searching easier. For distant targets, the number of pixels covering the target matters. Evaluate focus, eyepiece adjustment and controls with the conditions and gloves you actually use.
Compare the complete purchase: detector and lens, rangefinder, battery arrangement, weight, supplied accessories and local price. A compact 640 model and a larger 640 model need not deliver identical handling or images. Equally, the more expensive one cannot be assumed to deliver a better image without testing.
Binoculars: dedicated thermal or multispectral?
Pulsar Merger LRF and Merger Duo
The Merger LRF range provides dedicated thermal observation through two eyepieces. Selected models include the XP35 with a 640×480 detector, XL50 with 1024×768, and XT50 with 1280×1024. The XT50 specification includes a laser rangefinder rated to 1,500 m. These are different tiers, not interchangeable versions of the same device. [6]
Merger Duo NXP50 belongs in the multispectral group: it combines thermal imaging with a 1920×1200 digital channel. It has no built-in laser rangefinder and is not a 4K digital model. Its existence also means Symbion should not be described as Pulsar’s first multispectral product. [7]
HikMicro Habrok
The Habrok family combines thermal with digital day/night imaging. The Habrok name alone does not establish the digital resolution; check the exact model. Habrok 4K and 4K 2.0 combine 256×192 thermal imaging with a 3840×2160 digital sensor. [4, 5]
Habrok Pro HQ50L/HQ50LN use 640×512 thermal detectors at 50 Hz. HX60L/HX60LN use 1280×1024 at 25 Hz. The newer HX60LS uses 1280×1024 at 50 Hz. Confusing HX60L with HX60LS would materially misstate the specification. [4]

HikMicro’s published warranty information includes a 10-year detector term, subject to the applicable policy. This should not be presented as a 10-year warranty on every component. Pulsar publishes separate product and battery terms. Compare the exact local written coverage, exclusions and claim process rather than the largest headline number. Battery compatibility is model-specific
Pulsar lists APS3 compatibility for Axion Compact, while APS5 serves Oryx and Axion 2. Telos uses LPS 7i; Merger LRF combines a removable APS3 with an internal battery.
