Looking for HIKMICRO thermal imaging or night vision equipment in South Africa?
Survival Africa is an authorised HIKMICRO dealer in South Africa, based in Yzerfontein on the Western Cape and supplying customers nationwide.
We specialise in thermal imaging, digital night vision and multi-spectrum observation equipment for farm and rural security, wildlife observation, search and rescue, professional security work and outdoor use.
We don’t believe in selling a thermal device simply because it has the biggest numbers on the box. The right choice depends on what you actually need to see, at what distance, under what conditions and within what budget.
That is where we can help.

HIKMICRO Thermal Imaging & Night Vision in South Africa
HIKMICRO has developed one of the broadest ranges of thermal and digital night-vision equipment available today.
Depending on your application, the range includes:
- Thermal monoculars for fast heat detection and observation
- Multi-spectrum binoculars combining thermal and digital optical channels
- Digital night-vision devices
- Thermal imaging accessories and specialist equipment
- Compact thermal devices for outdoor, security and professional applications
Survival Africa carries selected HIKMICRO models and can assist customers in choosing equipment suited to their actual requirements.
If a particular model is not currently in stock, contact us about availability and sourcing.
HIKMICRO Thermal Monoculars
A thermal monocular detects heat rather than visible light.
This makes it particularly useful when a person, animal or other heat source would be difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye.
A thermal monocular can be used in complete darkness without an infrared illuminator.
Typical applications include:
- Farm and rural security
Scan open ground, fence lines, roads, vegetation and buildings for people or animals after dark. - Wildlife observation
Locate animals that may be almost invisible amongst vegetation or in poor light. - Search and rescue
Search large areas for human heat signatures where ordinary lights or cameras may struggle. - Security patrols
Quickly scan an area before moving closer to investigate. - Outdoor observation
Locate animals and other heat sources at night without relying on visible illumination.
See our range of HIKMICRO thermal monoculars for current models and availability.
Multi-Spectrum Technology: Thermal and Night Vision in One Device
Sometimes detecting something is only half the job.
Thermal imaging is excellent for finding a heat source, but a conventional optical image can make identification easier.
This is why multi-spectrum devices such as the HIKMICRO Habrok range are so useful.
A multi-spectrum binocular can combine technologies such as:
- Thermal imaging
- Digital day and night vision
- Infrared illumination
- Laser rangefinding
- Picture-in-picture viewing
You can use thermal imaging to locate something quickly and then use the optical channel to see more detail.
For applications such as farm security, wildlife observation and search and rescue, that combination can be far more useful than relying on only one imaging technology.
Thermal Imaging vs Night Vision
Thermal imaging and night vision are not the same thing.
Thermal imaging detects heat.
It does not require visible light and can locate warm objects in complete darkness.
Digital night vision uses reflected light.
It produces an image that looks more like a conventional camera and can therefore provide useful identification detail.
Neither technology is automatically “better”.
The better option depends on the job.
If your main requirement is finding people or animals in darkness, thermal imaging is usually the stronger detection tool.
If your main requirement is seeing visual detail, digital night vision may be more appropriate.
If you need both, a multi-spectrum system may be the better solution.
What HIKMICRO Should I Buy?
This is the question we would rather answer than simply tell you which model is the most expensive.
Before buying a thermal device, consider:
What are you trying to detect?
A person, livestock, wildlife and small animals present very different requirements.
At what distance?
A device that works well around buildings and farmyards may not be ideal for scanning hundreds of metres across open terrain.
Do you need detection or identification?
Seeing that something warm is there is not the same as being able to confidently determine what it is.
How wide an area must you scan?
Higher magnification can give a larger image, but it also reduces field of view.
For searching, a wide field of view can sometimes be more valuable than magnification.
What conditions will you use it in?
Rain, fog, humidity, vegetation and temperature differences can all influence thermal performance.
Do you need thermal only?
If you also need conventional visual identification, consider a multi-spectrum device rather than carrying separate thermal and night-vision equipment.
Understanding Thermal Specifications
Don’t buy a thermal monocular purely because of the advertised detection distance.
Several specifications affect real-world performance.
Thermal Resolution
Higher sensor resolution generally provides more image detail and allows you to retain more useful information when digitally magnifying the image.
NETD
NETD measures how well a thermal sensor can distinguish very small temperature differences.
A lower NETD value generally means better thermal sensitivity.
This becomes especially useful when the temperature difference between an object and its surroundings is small.
Lens Size
The lens influences magnification, field of view and useful observation distance.
A larger lens does not automatically mean a better device for every application.
Field of View
A wide field of view makes searching and scanning easier.
A narrower field of view can be useful for more distant observation.
This is why choosing a thermal camera from a specification sheet alone can be misleading.
HIKMICRO for Farm Security
Thermal imaging has become particularly useful for South African farms and rural properties because it allows large areas to be scanned without flooding the area with visible light.
Potential applications include:
- Fence-line inspection
- Perimeter patrols
- Detecting movement around buildings
- Locating people in open ground
- Finding livestock after dark
- Checking vegetation and surrounding terrain
- Investigating suspicious activity without immediately using a spotlight
Thermal imaging does not see through walls, buildings or ordinary glass.
It detects thermal energy coming from surfaces and objects within its line of sight.
Used correctly, however, it can give a security team a major observational advantage after dark.
HIKMICRO for Search and Rescue
Search teams often face the same basic problem: finding a person before they can identify or reach them.
A thermal imager can help searchers rapidly scan:
- Open terrain
- Bush
- Roads
- Fields
- Riverbanks
- Buildings and structures
- Areas with poor or no lighting
A human heat signature can sometimes stand out strongly against the surrounding environment.
Thermal imaging is not a replacement for trained search personnel, tracking, communications or other rescue equipment, but it can be an extremely valuable detection tool.
HIKMICRO for Wildlife and Birding
Thermal imaging can also reveal wildlife that would otherwise remain completely unnoticed.
Animals hidden in grass, bushes or darkness can often be located from their heat signature.
Thermal is particularly useful for finding an animal.
A digital optical or conventional camera remains better when colour, plumage, markings or fine visual detail are needed for positive identification.
This is another area where HIKMICRO’s multi-spectrum devices can make sense: use thermal to find the subject and the optical channel to study it.
